Posted by E17 Designers

Please find below an opportunity which is open to everyone to apply: I  have already joined the East End Trades Guild and will participate on behalf of E17 Designes when I can (bring the East End to E17 !) BUT in order not to miss out on further opportunities you may want to follow up about East End Trades Guild

for yourself (they are looking for E17 members), I have pasted the details for that at the bottom of this blog.

What could 4 weeks do to transform your creative business?

The East End Trades Guild is partnering with East London skill sharing network Echo (economyofhours.com) to bring you a 4-week intense programme of enterprise support to help you grow your business, your network and your skillset.

Based on the tried-and-tested Echo++ accelerator model, Creative++ will give you:

•   Action Learning sessions

•   Guest talks – learn from the highs & lows of other creative businesses

•   1-2-1 consultations with industry experts to move your marketing, PR, sales funnel and other strategic challenges forward

•   A chance to pitch to an industry panel – receive concrete feedback and bag some Echo prizes

•   A network of 3600+ businesses and professionals – tap into valuable skills and expertise, and create champions for your business

And there’s no money involved: the programme is paid for, and powered by, the skills and knowledge shared and connections and collaborations created among the Echo community.

If you’re a creative business operating in East London and ready to raise your business game, this course is for you.

Apply by 15th January at economyofhours.com/creative

Programme runs Saturdays 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th February 2017

nuMONDAY.com, a start up with big ambitions to create a community of small businesses that specialise in handcrafted and handmade products.

Our aim is to launch in December 2016 and have as many of the best small and creative businesses who specialise within handmade and handcrafted products in the UK.

We want to give all our members an opportunity to showcase and grow their businesses.

It’s free to set up your shop on nuMONDAY.com and it only take a few minutes to do so.

I want to be completely transparent and upfront with you and we do take a 10% commission charge from all sales but unlike other market sites out there we do not charge a set up fee or annual fee to be with us.

You will also receive sales immediately via Stripe and not on a scheduled payment cycle.

The commission we charge will go into marketing and driving traffic to our site as well as supporting the creative and craft community within the UK.

As I mentioned earlier, we are just starting up but our site already has 10 amazing shops all with products ready to sell for launch.

It is also worth noting any shop that sets up before our launch, in early December, on nuMONDAY.com will become Featured Sellers for life.

I would love your feedback and to work with you create a truly fantastic online community market on nuMONDAY.com,

Night Feast: Gazebo is now available, please apply direct to Chris!

Posted by E17 Designers

Hello Designers,

I understand that arranging a gazebo to trade at Night Feast has been difficult for many of you, especially as it's not a regular thing you need for other trading opportunities. I have a solution - we have a large 6 x 3m gazebo that could be used to house at least six traders on separate tables. It can go in the middle of the space in between the food stalls, creating a separate designers area.

We would still need for you to arrange a table for yourselves and perhaps some lights to decorate it, then it will look fantastic. For those interested in trading at the Christmas market on December 9th, please contact me at nightfeast17@gmail.com

Christmas special market on Friday 9th December 5pm - late.

Posted by E17 Designers

SPECIAL REQUEST FOR TRADERS ON FRIDAY 9TH DECEMBER::::

Please contact Chris direct: as he suggest, if you share a gazebo, you could make a horseshoe from 3 pasting/camping tables?

Dear E17 Designers,

Christmas is upon us and we're gearing for a one-off Christmas special market on Friday 9th December 5pm - late. We're planning to make the evening festive, with choirs, singalong carols, competitions and a CHRISTMAS ARTS & CRAFTS market. We will be advertising in the council's newspaper and listing in timeout.

We'd love to have a variety of traders on board and will expand the market area into the space below the big screen. The pitch fee for arts and crafts is £25. You will need to provide your own gazebo, table and lights. I'm happy for people to partner up under the same gazebo. If you're concerned about having to buy one, you probably know someone who will have one of the cheap ones (sold at Argos).

Please let us know by 3pm on Monday 11th Nov if you'd like to attend and be ready to pay the non-refundable pitch fee of £25 paid into the Night Feast account. Your place will be confirmed with the payment.

Please note that in the unlikely event of a cancellation of the event by Night Feast, then the deposit will be refunded.

Any questions then please let me know. You can contact me at nightfeast17@gmail.com

Regards

Toy Safety: if you are selling your products as TOYS, here is a useful blog

Posted by E17 Designers

Toy Safety: if you are selling your products as TOYS,  here is a useful blog about how a designer had to make her “sock toys” conform to Toy Safety.  This blog is to help you to be aware, not to scare you:

·      In June 2011 the law regarding toy safety changed when the Toy Safety Directive 2011 came into force.

·      This stated that: any product (mass produced or handmade) that looked like a toy or was a toy that had play value should be tested to ensure it was safe for any child (under the age of 14) from birth and should carry the CE mark to show it is safe.

·      A sign saying not suitable for under 3s is no longer allowed, unless there is a factor in the toy that means due to dexterity or developmental levels a child under 3 couldn’t manage to play with the toy (e.g. a doll with clothes that can be removed). There are many products that this applies to that aren’t necessarily ‘toys’ such as cushions that are shaped and are obviously for children, pencil rolls and even children’s ‘taggies’. There are some exemptions such as memory bears, where the clothes are supplied by the customer and the finished item is not a toy and art dolls aimed at adults with a high price tag to indicate that they are not a toy. Christmas decorations do not need to be tested.

To ensure toys meet the directive and the supplier doesn’t get caught with a £5000 fine or even a prison sentence:

·      toys must be tested to ensure they are safe.

·      the company Comformance supplies self-certification packs that provide the necessary information to being able to test from home.

·      In this instance the maker carries out the tests (weight, flammability, small components), obtains certificate for the fabrics used, and keeps on file a record of the tests.

·      This file (the technical file) must be kept for 10 years.  I was very nervous when I first started testing and was amazed at how strong socks can be – the weight test stretches seams with 7.2kg of weights (see photo of a little tail being pulled on a Rudolph!). Burning the animals to make sure they are safe is slightly alarming though! Being part of a ‘sock toy group’ on Facebook was invaluable in helping me better understand the various tests I had to do and to help buy the certificates to show the socks were safe to use and passed ‘chemical migration tests’. These certificates were bought after the socks were sent to testing labs.

No toys should be sold without the CE mark and I do know of makers that have had their businesses shut down after trading standards have either found them selling online or at a market. Trading standards have been helpful to me when I wanted to try a new product and didn’t know if it was classified as a toy. However, I have heard that trading standards in different areas have differing views about what needs to be tested so it’s always best to check with your own trading standards.

To start the ‘CE’ journey I’d recommend contacting Conformance (http://www.conformance.co.uk/) and the facebook group CE marked soft toy support network. Finally, while I have tried to simplify soft toy testing anyone looking to do this should look into the issue themselves as knowing the legal requirements is necessary and trading standards give different information depending on where they are.  For more in-depth information regarding the law and testing I’d recommend reading the section on ‘Handmade toys – CE marking’ here http://oddsandsoxlets.co.uk/blog/

looking ahead to 2017: Valentines Day or Mother's Day?

looking ahead to 2017: Valentines Day or Mother's Day?

*Thinking* about a Vestry House Museum event: we did an event in March (1940's themed craft fair) and they said thay had 500 people come through the doors..

As a theme, the two dates I am talking about are good opportunites for fairs. Which do you think would be better, bearing in mind the sort of customers and the venue? Over to you, zip me an answer and we will review with Mhairi later on in the year based on their calendar and the results:

St James Street Big Local

From St James Street Big Local: reply direct to Tom McVeigh

We have had an event around the Christmas tree for the past couple of years and this year St James Street Big Local want to expand it a little. We are having a lantern procession of local school children down the High Street from outside Wilko down to the St James Street end of the High street where the tree is. We want some food stalls and a up to 4 craft stalls selling Christmas themed items and have had a meeting with Waltham Forest street trading who are happy for us to go ahead and organise it. They ask the stall holders to provide product and public liability documents. We are looking for stallholders to provide their own stalls and awnings etc but we could get in touch with street trading to see if they have any they could provide?

The order of events is as follows:

Stallholders set up from  3 00 onwards on 11th December

Children meet at outside Wilko with lanterns at 4 30 and then the procession starts down High St.

Give some time for people to eat, buy gifts and get a glass of mulled wine and mince pies or German cake.

From 5 45 until 6 00 we have a chamber choir giving a performance from 5 45 until 6 00 then they will join the public with the brass band with 1 hour of Christmas carols.

I hope this helps and please do get in touch with any questions.

LEYTONSTONE’S CHRISTMAS MARKET TRAIL

¯  This market is supported by the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Stone’s Throw Market, the local business community, Church Lane Market, Matalan Market and the High Road Leytonstone Methodist Church.

¯  It is part of a community strategy to draw people into Leytonstone on the first Saturday of December.

¯  The Christmas Market Trail has a key role in this strategy.  We hope to present a high quality Christmas Market incorporating ‘Stones Throw Market’ located at St John’s and additional stalls at Lister Memorial Hall, Leytonstone Methodist Church, Matalan Market, all offering a wide range of Art and Craft Stalls with goods for sale.

¯  Most of the space at St John’s will be taken up by ‘Stone’s Throw Market’ therefore unless you are already part of that market, you will be applying for one of the Art & Craft stalls available in the Lister Hall of High Road Methodist Church.

¯  The Market will be open to the public from 11am – 4pm and stall holders need to undertake to be there for that period.

¯  The charge for having a stall is £12.50 each, and all of this sum will go towards the rent for use of the halls and should be paid in advance to secure your place.  Cheques for Lister Road should be made to Leytonstone Methodist Church.

¯  Stall holders will be expected to take out their own insurance for this event.

¯  Stalls can be set up from 10:00am on Saturday 3rd December, and must be cleared away by 5pm on Saturday 3rd December.

¯  Applications for an Art & Craft stall at this Christmas Market must be made to the Rev. ‘Femi Cole-Njie, Leytonstone Methodist Church, Corner of Leytonstone High Rd & Lister Road, Leytonstone E11 3DS, by email or post using the application form on the next page, by 30th October 2016.
